ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE
… is the essence of archaeology and historical anthropology, and of Paestum in particular. By discovering the architecture, art, rites, and culture of ancient Greece – a world so distant from our way of living and thinking – we can realize the variety of human life throughout history.
When, in the 18th century, the first travelers visited the site of Paestum, they did not know what to think of the Doric temples, of their severe and archaic style. But it is precisely the otherness of these buildings, and of the community that built them, that is the basis of the fascination that the Magna Graecia site has exerted ever since.
The amazement experienced by eighteenth-century travellers in front of the testimonies of the classical world was destined to be repeated up to the present: the sculptural frieze of the first temple of Hera on the Sele river, the Tomb of the Diver, the bronze vases from the Heroon… works exhibited today in the museum that question and irritate the observer, speaking of a bygone world, “totally alien” to our gaze, as Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote. A world, however, that also reserves a message for the future: the variety of forms of life, art, politics, thought, love that we find in history, demonstrates: another world is possible.

“TOUR ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXVATIONS HERCULANEUM” ERCOLANO CITY”
Historic Center
Herculaneum is an ancient Roman town located in the modern-day comune of Ercolano, Campania, Italy. Herculaneum was buried under a massive pyroclastic flow in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Like the nearby city of Pompeii, Herculaneum is famous as one of the few ancient cities to be preserved nearly intact, as the solidified material from the volcano that blanketed the town protected it against looting and the elements. Although less known than Pompeii today, it was the first and, for a long time, the only discovered Vesuvian city (in 1709). Pompeii was revealed in 1748 and identified in 1763.[1] Unlike Pompeii, the mainly pyroclastic material that covered Herculaneum carbonized and preserved more wooden objects such as roofs, beds, and doors, as well as other organic-based materials such as food and papyrus.
According to the traditional tale, the city was rediscovered by chance in 1709 during the drilling of a well. Remnants of the city, however, were already found during earlier earthworks.[2] In the years following the site’s uncovering, treasure seekers excavated tunnels and took artifacts. Regular excavations commenced in 1738 and have continued irregularly since. Today, only a fraction of the ancient site has been excavated. The focus has shifted to preserving the already-excavated portions of the city rather than exposing more. Smaller than Pompeii with a population of circa 5,000,[3] Herculaneum was a wealthier town.[4] It was a seaside retreat for the Roman elite, as reflected by the extraordinary density of luxurious houses featuring lavish use of coloured marble cladding. Buildings of the ancient city include the Villa of the Papyri and the so-called “boat houses”, wherein the skeletal remains of at least 300 people were found.

Temples of Paestum
Paestum contains a wealth of works and monuments of unimaginable value (historical and otherwise). Let’s start by saying that Paestum is surrounded by a wall (which extends for about 4.75 km) and that it has gates located at the cardinal points. There is no shortage of points of interest: first of all we have the temples (in Doric style, as well as perfect examples of Magna Graecia, dedicated to Hera, Athena and Poseidon) which have miraculously reached us in excellent condition. Then there is the Gaudo necropolis, one of the largest necropolises of Paestum (think that it extends for over 2000 square meters). There is also an important museum that contains numerous collections of works of various kinds. First of all the grave goods (such as vases, weapons and Greek and Lucanian frescoed tomb slabs) of the aforementioned necropolis. An excellent example of Greek painting of the classical age of Magna Graecia could be found in the famous Tomb of the Diver (480-470 BC) with a cultured representation of the transition from life to the realm of the dead.
CASTELLABATE CITY
The historic center of Castellabate, included in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, is recognized by UNESCO as a “World Heritage Site” under the Man and Biosphere program. Let’s start from this fact – which recognizes the profound value of this “Cultural Landscape” rich in memories and artistic and natural assets – to discover the village, which still preserves its medieval urban structure. Narrow streets, alleys, arches, short flights of steps, buildings, open spaces and interconnected houses where gray stone dominates, chase each other without interruption, now turning their backs on the intense light now opening onto the green of the slope that slopes down towards the shining sea, stained only by the banks of posidonia, in one of the most suggestive corners of the Cilento coast. The beauty of the coast and the clarity of the waters have allowed the territory of Castellabate, which overlooks the sea with the populous center of Santa Maria and the smaller one of San Marco, to obtain the Blue Flag, the Four Sails and the recognitions of Legambiente.
ACCIAROLI CITY
Acciaroli, Pioppi and Pollica: a triangle of wonders in Cilento.
On the suggestive coast of Cilento, which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea, stand three enchanting gems: Acciaroli, Pioppi and Pollica. Acciaroli, with its picturesque seaside village, transforms into a lively center during the tourist season, attracting visitors from every corner of the world. This charming seaside resort has been awarded the prestigious “5 sails” by Legambiente and the Blue Flag by virtue of its renowned beaches. Pioppi, an ancient fishing village, stands out for its authenticity and the tranquility of its pebble beach, lapped by crystal-clear waters. Here, time seems to pass more slowly, allowing you to enjoy traditional cuisine based on fresh fish. The Living Museum of the Sea and the Mediterranean Diet, located inside the suggestive Palazzo Vinciprova, in Pioppi, carefully preserves archaeological finds and evidence of the maritime life of the area. This fascinating museum not only tells the story of the sea and local fishermen, but also promotes the healthy lifestyle and typical nutrition of the Mediterranean diet.

At the gates of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in the province of Salerno, the Castelcivita Caves constitute, with a total length of about 4800 m, one of the largest speleological complexes in southern Italy. The system of underground cavities opens at 94 m above sea level, between the banks of the Calore river and the south-western slope of the Alburni mountains, immediately showing a suggestive scenario of tunnels, large spaces and narrow passages dug by the millenary action of karst erosion.

It was founded in the late Middle Ages on the slopes of the mountain to make it invisible from the sea, safe from Saracen attacks. The ideal way to discover it is by walking through the streets of its historic center, starting from Via dell’Unità d’Italia where you can admire the sixteenth-century Church of the Annunziata characterized by a dome of green and yellow majolica and by the two stone lions of the medieval era, coming from a church in the Castle, which frame the entrance portal.

but they are also the only ones in Europe to preserve the remains of a pile-dwelling village dating back to the 2nd millennium BC.
With our guides, the visit to the tourist-equipped caves (marked and comfortable routes) and illuminated by a latest-generation system, turns into a pleasant adventure. The river offers a fascinating and unusual boat trip, immersed in a magical silence, interrupted only by the roar of the underground waterfall.

AMALFI
Amalfi (municipality of 4776 inhabitants which in 1997 was awarded the title of UNESCO heritage site) is famous for its Cathedral (also called Amalfi Cathedral) of Sant’Andrea (patron saint of the city) and for the Paper Museum (former paper mill which became a museum in 1969) the owner Nicola Milano seems to be aware (thanks to belonging to an ancient family of paper makers) of how paper is produced Bambagina (Amalfi paper). In addition to the typical places, however, there is also another thing that characterizes Amalfi, the lemons.
The Amalfi Lemon (so called due to its characteristic tapered shape) is a product with very valuable and renowned characteristics: the peel is of medium thickness, light yellow in colour, with an intense aroma and scent thanks to the richness of essential oils and terpenes (character considered valuable for the production of lemon liqueur.). The pulp is juicy and moderately acidic, with few seeds. It is also a medium-large sized lemon (at least 100 grams per fruit), as well as one of the varieties richest in ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Widely used in cooking both naturally and as a condiment, Amalfi sfusato is the main ingredient of dishes from the Amalfi Coast, both fish and meat based, as well as in the preparation of desserts, creams, infusions and liqueurs.

POSITANO
Positano is perhaps a unique place in the world! It is a jewel of spontaneous architecture, set on the rock overlooking the sea. Clusters of colorful houses, sometimes cubic in appearance, are built on often very steep steps, which descend to the beach, connected by alleys and long stairways.
Traveling along the coastal road offers sudden panoramic views from above of the small town, disembarking from the sea is truly a unique experience that fills the eyes and soul with beauty!
And it is precisely from the sea, around the 1st century AD, that the Romans first arrived, intent on building sumptuous seaside villas in Positano and along the Amalfi Coast ‘for the exercise of their refined leisure’. The villa in Positano is said to have belonged to Posides Claudi Cesaris, a freedman of the emperor Claudius, hence the name Posidianum extended from the villa to the entire place.

The Royal Palace of Caserta
The Royal Palace of Caserta (Italian: Reggia di Caserta, Italian) is a former royal residence in Caserta, Campania, 35km north of Naples in southern Italy, constructed by the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies as their main residence as kings of Naples. Located 35 km north of the historic center of Naples, Italy, the complex is the largest palace erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; its nomination described it as “the swan song of the spectacular art of the Baroque, from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions of multidirectional space”. The Royal Palace of Caserta is the largest former royal residence in the world, over 2 million m3, in volume and covering an area of 47,000 m2, and a floorspace of 138,000 square meters is distributed in the five stories of the building. he construction of the palace began in 1752[2] for Charles VII of Naples (later Charles III of Spain), who worked closely with his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli.
When Charles saw Vanvitelli’s grandly scaled model for Caserta, it filled him with emotion “fit to tear his heart from his breast.”[9] In the end, Charles never slept a night at the Reggia, as he abdicated in 1759 to become King of Spain.[8] The project was carried to only partial completion for Charles’ third son and successor, Ferdinand IV of Naples. The palace has five floors; 1,200 rooms, including two dozen state apartments; 1,742 windows; 34 staircases; 1,026 fireplaces; a large library; and a theatre modelled after the Teatro San Carlo of Naples. A monumental avenue running 20 kilometers between the palace and Naples was planned but never realized.
The garden, a typical example of the Baroque extension of formal vistas, stretches for 120 hectares, partly on hilly terrain. Its construction started in 1753, and it is also inspired by the park of Versailles. The park starts from the back façade of the palace, flanking a long alley with artificial fountains and cascades. There is a botanical garden called “The English Garden” in the upper part designed in the 1780s[ by Carlo Vanvitelli and the German-born botanist, nurseryman, and plantsman-designer, John Graefer, who was trained in London and recommended to Sir William Hamilton by Sir Joseph Banks. It is an early Continental example of an English garden in the svelte naturalistic taste of Capability Brown.
The fountains and cascades, each filling a vasca (basin), with architecture and hydraulics by Luigi Vanvitelli at intervals along a wide straight canal that runs to the horizon, rivalled those at Peterhoff Palace outside St.
The palace was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The Campanian Amphitheater Capua
The Campanian Amphitheater, built in the Flavian age on the model of the Colosseum, between the end of the 1st century. A.D. and the 2nd century. AD, was restored and decorated with columns and statues by the emperor Hadrian, and inaugurated by his successor Antoninus Pius, as it was possible to reconstruct thanks to an inscription found in 1726. The grandiose machine for shows, capable of hosting up to 60,000 spectators, equipped with large underground areas for staging sumptuous shows, replaces the ancient arena (130-90 BC), also known for Spartacus’ revolt of 73 BC.
Gladiator Museum
In the first room the gladiatorial games are presented, with panels, copies of the armor found in Pompeii, a model, which shows the Amphitheater both in its original form and as a ruin, and a video, which narrates the history and architecture of the
monument. Evidence of the site’s history is also on display, from a necropolis to an entertainment district.
Surviving busts of the deities of the portico, high on the wall, invite you to enter the second room where a sector of the cavea has been reconstructed, with its splendid marble decorations.
